At Black Canyon Foods we believe healthy living depends on knowing your body, and then of equal importance knowing exactly what you put into your body. We believe that whenever possible, you should choose organic products. When organic isn't available we offer natural product selections that meet our criteria for natural - no growth hormones, no antibiotics, no animal by-products fed to the livestock, no additives, no preservatives, no added nitrites, no added nitrates.

The term organic refers not to the food itself, but to how it is produced or raised. Organic food production is based on a system of farming that maintains and replenishes the fertility of the soil. Organic foods are produced without the use of toxic pesticides, fertilizers, herbicides, insecticides, fungicides or hormones. No artificial flavors or colors have been added. Organic foods are minimally processed to maintain the integrity of the food without artificial ingredients, preservatives or irradiation (Food irradiation is the process of exposing food to ionizing radiation in order to disinfest, sterilize, or preserve food. It is often called cold pasteurization or electronic pasteurization.). Animals raised organically cannot be fed antibiotics, the bovine human growth hormone (rbGH), or other artificial drugs. Animals also cannot eat genetically modified foods. Further, animal products certified as organic cannot have their genes modified (for example, a scorpion gene cannot be spliced into a cow gene). The animals are raised in a healthier environment, fed organic feed, and often eat a wider range of nutrients than those raised in factory farms (such as would be the case of free-range chickens and ranch cattle).

For several decades, industrialized production and mass marketing of foods have made it almost impossible for consumers to understand the content or the source of their foods. At the same time, our eating habits associated with convenience and fast foods have had a negative impact on our physical and social well-being.

The use of antibiotics, synthetic hormones, and genetically modified organisms (GMOs) to raise production in today’s conventional agriculture practices has also given rise to some serious health questions. The common factory-farm practice of feeding rendered animal byproducts (for example, feeding cows with products containing ground up cows) and non-organic substances has raised some serious red flags, for animal and human health alike. Not only do these practices pose questions about humane animal treatment, they have also been proven or suspected to play a role in numerous adult and children health concerns including early puberty, allergies, and BSE (Mad Cow Disease).

Although there is differing opinion within the scientific community, some studies and common sense! suggests that the prolific use of chemicals, additives, preservatives, and genetically engineered organisms in and on our food has caused the significant increase in childhood diseases such as asthma, allergies, eczema, diabetes and even cancer; they also suggest a direct relationship to the increase in adult diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and most specifically cancer.

We believe that a lifestyle excluding foods produced with the use of chemicals, additives, preservatives, and genetically engineered organisms and including only organic & natural foods is the common sense choice.

Here is the short list of the benefits of organic foods.

  • No pesticide, herbicide, fungicide residues on food
  • Less chlorine chemistry into our environment
  • No synthetic fertilizer residuals built into plants
  • No genetically engineered organisms or varieties
  • Intense, realistic flavors
  • Higher vitamin content
  • Higher mineral content and greater mineral variety
